Item Details: A magnificent antique Japanese Meiji Period (1868–1912) high-relief vase. The vase features a highly dramatic narrative scene depicting a fierce Samurai warrior or guardian figure standing beneath a towering Buddhist pagoda, set under a large full moon in a mountainous landscape. The casting is incredibly crisp, featuring rich textures on the armor and garments, along with beautiful mixed-metal/gold-toned inlay highlights on the warrior's armor. It has a heavy, substantial weight of 2 lbs 12.0 oz and measures approximately 8.75" H x 4" W.
Condition Note (Please Read Before Offering):
The Base/Foot: The vase has a broken foot at the integral base. However, THE DETACHED BROKEN PIECE IS FULLY INCLUDED (see photos). The broken fragment is a beautifully detailed mythical bird-demon/Garuda mask. The break line is relatively clean, making it a perfect candidate for professional silver soldering, laser welding, or epoxy repair.
The Metal: The exposed metal inside the break has a silvery/white metal tone beneath the dark exterior patina, indicating a heavy mixed-metal or zinc/spelter alloy base common in some Meiji casting works.
The Surface: There is no visible artist signature. The surface shows an authentic aged patina with areas of expected surface oxidation, minor pitting, and light green verdigris spotting around the sky and moon areas (clearly shown in the detail photos).
