Impressive antique Japanese Kyoto Satsuma-style earthenware jardinière featuring an exceptionally large, heavy-bodied form with elaborate hand-painted floral decoration against a rich red ground.
The exterior is extensively decorated with cascading wisteria and other flowers and foliage in soft blue, white, pink, green and yellow enamels, accented throughout with raised gilt detailing. The lower border is equally elaborate with traditional geometric and floral decoration.
The underside bears a hand-painted Japanese mark including “Dai Nippon Kyoto” (Great Japan, Kyoto) along with a maker/workshop inscription. Based on the construction, decoration and marking, this appears consistent with Japanese export-period pottery, likely Meiji/early 20th century.
This is a substantial statement-size piece, much larger than a typical Satsuma vase or planter. Please see the photograph with the water bottle for scale.
The interior and upper rim show exposed/unglazed earthenware consistent with the construction of the piece. There is extensive age-related crazing, surface wear, gilt loss, discoloration, small edge losses and other signs of age/use. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.
