Antique bronze commemorative medal issued for the International Congress of Americanists (Congrès International des Américanistes), dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
The obverse features an elegant profile of the allegorical figure of America wearing a feathered crown, surrounded by a richly detailed border decorated with native flora. The initials C.A.I. (Congrès International des Américanistes) appear around the edge, together with a Roman numeral I at the bottom.
The International Congress of Americanists, established in 1875, is one of the oldest scholarly organizations devoted to the archaeology, anthropology, history, and cultures of the Americas. Medals issued for its meetings are sought after by collectors of historical medals, numismatics, and Americana.
