Gilbert’s substantial retelling brings together the great Arthurian stories, including the Sword in the Stone, Excalibur and the Lady of the Lake, Lancelot, Galahad and the Holy Grail, Mordred, and the death of King Arthur.
Especially desirable for its16 full-page color plates by Walter Crane (1845–1915), one of the major figures of the Golden Age of British book illustration. Among the subjects are Arthur drawing the sword from the stone, the Lady of the Lake presenting Excalibur, Lancelot in the Chapel Perilous, Galahad at the court of King Arthur, and Bedevere returning Excalibur to the lake.
