A genuine Otto Hackbarth patent putter — one of the most famous and sought-after designs in antique golf, very hard to find in any condition.

The Maker & Design:

Otto Hackbarth was a golf professional and skilled clubmaker who created this putter design around 1910, receiving a U.S. patent (No. 687589) for it in 1914. The club features his signature bifurcated “forked” hosel, with one prong joining the head at the heel and the other at the toe — a design intended to limit twisting of the face at impact for a truer roll. The head shape is identical on both sides, allowing the putter to be used right- or left-handed.

Notable History:

The Hackbarth Putter developed a strong following in its day. Chick Evans used it en route to winning both the 1916 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur, and it was also used by baseball legend Babe Ruth, President Warren Harding, and John D. Rockefeller. An example sold for a $5,000 hammer price at a Sotheby’s sale in 2007.
