$15.00

Harper's Introductory Geography" was a popular American schoolbook, published by Harper & Brothers of New York (with later editions issued through the American Book Company after it absorbed several textbook publishers in 1890). It was designed as a beginner-level geography textbook for young students.

Book condition: Fair. Heavy wear to spine and cover corners, rubbing and soil to covers so that illustrations and red accents are very pale. Interior clean, inside front cover has names and an address of previous owner. Front flyleaf has been torn out, old repair to front hinge with archival tape.

Key features:

  • 112 pages, with illustrations and maps, in a small format around 12" tall
  • Subtitled "With Maps and Illustrations Prepared Expressly for This Work by Eminent American Artists" — it featured colored maps and numerous illustrations commissioned specifically for the book
  • Text is simple and aimed at children — the opening lines describe the earth as a great globe and explain the ground we stand on as part of its surface
  • The book went through many printings from the late 1870s through the early 1900s with editions recorded in 1877, 1879, 1880, 1883, 1885, 1888, and beyond, published by both Harper & Brothers and later the American Book Company
  • It was a small, thin quarto-style volume, bound in original pictorial cloth, often stamped in black and red
