Description: An elaborate antique German Hanau silver covered box in the Rococo Revival taste, richly worked throughout in repoussé and chased decoration. The shaped rectangular body is raised on four scrolling feet and decorated with cartouches containing romantic pastoral figures, surrounded by dense floral, foliate, shell, and scroll ornament. Additional vacant cartouches appear at the ends. The domed hinged cover continues the elaborate rocaille decoration and is surmounted by a cast floral or berry-form finial. The interior retains a rich gilt finish, including repoussé ornament visible to the interior of the lid and body. The underside bears two pseudo-hallmarks, characteristic of the Hanau silver industry, whose makers frequently employed fantasy marks inspired by earlier European silver marks on antique-style wares.
