Antique George I Silver Rat Tail Mote Spoon, 6 1/8” C1720 For Sale

This is a George I silver mote spoon featuring a delicate Rococo pattern of open scrollwork perforations surrounding a central torch design. The inside of the bowl still retains a faded gold wash. The extra long handle transitions into a long, thin, spike-like terminal with a small finial. On the back is a “rat-tail” that extends from the handle down the back of the bowl for extra strength.

Mote spoons were used primarily during the late 17th and 18th century as part of the tea-drinking ritual. The intricate, hand-pierced upper section allowed tea hosts to skim floating particles, loose leaves, and tea dust ("motes") directly out of a teacup without removing the liquid. The pointed spike end was used to clear the teapot's spout if it became clogged with loose tea particles. Based on the length of the handle on this note spoon, it was made for a larger teapot or dispensing urn.

The mote spoon measures approximately 6 1/8 inches long and weighs approximately 8.8 grams. The mark on the spoon is indecipherable.
