Wonderful antique French still life oil painting of paint brushes with pot, attributed to Jean-Baptiste Adolphe Gibert (1803 to 1889). Oil on wood board in very good antique condition. Uneven paint surface due to board used by the artist (likely old woodworm in the wood prior to the creation of the painting). One scratch present lower middle as shown. Paint strong with very good technique, referred to by an expert with Barnebys as done by a "master hand". Housed in a later French wood frame with minor age related wear as shown. Wonderful moody colors and subject. Signed upper right.
Born in Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, Gibert moved to Paris in 1821. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1825 and in 1929 won the Prix de Rome for historical landscape. He routinely exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1831 to 1872. His works can be found in prominent permanent collections such as the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and The Museum of the History of France in Versailles, including a piece commissioned by King Louis-Philippe.
