Fishing Boats in a Rocky Harbor
Antique French harbor painting with fishing boats at their moorings, oil on board in the Post-Impressionist style, circle of Maxime Maufra, French School, circa 1900, unsigned, in a carved gilt frame.
The tide is low and the boats are resting. Tall-masted fishing boats crowd together on the right, while small rowing boats in red, green and white lie scattered across the pale water in front. A rocky headland climbs behind them, green on top, with a single house against the sky. The paint is laid on thick and fast, in short loaded strokes you can still feel on the surface, and the grey clouds are brushed in with the same quick hand.
An old typed gallery label on the back reads Sélection Galerie Florane, École Française XIXème, Bateaux de pêche, French School, 19th century, fishing boats. The board itself carries the stamp of P. Contet, dealer in fine colours and painting canvases, Paris. In 1886 Contet took over the Latouche colour shop at 34 rue Lafayette, where Impressionist pictures had been shown to the public. Camille Pissarro ordered his canvases there, and so did his son Lucien. This board came off the same counter.
