Antique French Silhouette Pendant “Honneur de Pourville” c.1700s Inscribed
⸻
Description
Antique French silhouette portrait pendant housed in an ornate gilt brass frame, dating to the late 18th century. The front features a classic hand-cut paper profile silhouette of a gentleman in period dress, protected under convex glass.
The reverse retains its original backing with an early handwritten inscription reading:
“Honneur de Pourville
172_ – 1796”
The final date 1796 is clearly legible. The birth year appears to read circa 1728, though the first date is partially faded, consistent with age and the use of graphite on textile backing.
Pourville refers to a historic village in Normandy, France, and the phrasing “de Pourville” indicates association with that place. The inscription does not correspond to a known title or office and is best understood as identifying a private individual rather than a public or titled figure. Such silhouettes were commonly created as personal keepsakes or memorial portraits in the 18th century.
