He looks straight out at us, very serious for his age, with rosy cheeks and soft fair hair brushed forward over his forehead. His brown coat is buttoned up to the neck, and over it spreads a wide white collar of crisp little ruffles, painted stroke by stroke so that each fold catches the light. Collars like this were what boys wore around 1800, before they were old enough to dress like men. Against the dark, plain background, his face and that white frill are all the painter has let shine.
