ANTIQUE CHINESE EMBROIDERED SILK ROBE Elaborately Embroidered Woman's Long Jacket • Antique Chinese Textile A beautifully preserved and exceptionally decorative example of historic Chinese embroidery
Offered here is a beautiful antique Chinese woman's embroidered silk long robe or jacket, traditionally known as an ao. Based upon its materials, construction, form, and decorative treatment, the garment appears consistent with an older Chinese textile, likely dating to the late Qing period or early 20th century.
The ivory-toned silk ground is extensively decorated with ornate floral embroidery in copper, pink, blue, green, gold and other colors. Large flowering motifs appear throughout the body, contrasted beautifully against black edging and elaborate embroidered borders.
EXCEPTIONAL EMBROIDERY Particularly striking are the wide sleeve panels and collar area, which feature extremely detailed multicolored embroidery with flowers, butterflies, geometric borders, figures, vessels, objects and other traditional decorative motifs. These areas display a remarkable amount of fine handwork and are visually impressive even at close range.
The front is secured with traditional black frog-style closures, while the black trim creates a strong visual contrast against the pale silk. The garment is long and elegant in proportion, making it equally attractive as a historic costume textile or as a display piece.
GARMENT TYPE & ATTRIBUTION
This appears to be a Han Chinese woman's long jacket rather than an imperial, official, or formal court robe. It was likely intended as an elegant outer garment and survives today as a wonderful example of historic Chinese textile and embroidery craftsmanship.
The estimated age and attribution are based upon visual examination of the garment's materials, embroidery, construction and decorative style. It has not been professionally authenticated or formally appraised, and no documentary provenance accompanies the piece.
CONDITION
The garment presents extremely well overall for an antique textile of this age. The embroidery remains vibrant and highly detailed, and the jacket retains an impressive overall appearance.
There is approximately one inch of seam separation beneath one arm, along with a small number of loose or missing threads. The surrounding silk does not appear significantly torn, and the opposite underarm remains intact. There is also visible age-related staining and discoloration around portions of the collar, along with other minor signs of age and use consistent with an antique textile.
