An impressive antique Chinese lacquer and gilt sewing cabinet originally made to sit atop a table with legs (see last photo for the original design). It is black, with a hinged lid, and profusely decorated with painted scenes in gold showing figures at leisure on terraces and in gardens among pagodas. The interior has several compartments, some with covers and some lift out, one features a carved bone spool holder and another a silk pin cushion. It dates to the second half of the 19th century and was made in the Cantonese area of imperial China. We include here an article from an original Life magazine from February 1972 which documents a similar piece from a collection in Peabody, Massachusetts. This explains some ofthe history of the Canton region in China and their trade with the United States during the Qing Dynasty.
The condition is fair, antique, with cracks in the lacquer. There is also rubbing and fading of the gilt.We have documented each side, the top and bottom with detailed photographs. The front and left side and interior are in very good condition with minor chips to the lacquer at the rim and clearer and brighter gilt. The top, back and one side of the box show more damage.
