This magnificent pair of antique Bohemian wine hock glasses exemplifies the pinnacle of late 19th to early 20th-century European art glass.
Standing 7.25 inches tall, each hand-blown glass features a deep, vibrant cranberry ruby-red glass bowl resting gracefully on an exquisite clear crystal twisted ribbon spiral stem and a wide, matching cranberry foot. The exterior of the bowl is meticulously decorated with hand-painted porcelain enamel detailing, showcasing a winding motif of multi-colored grapevines and autumn leaves with crisp, raised 3D texture.
A heavy, highly ornate band of 24k gold leaf gilding borders the rim with delicate scrolling vines flowing downward, beautifully complemented by matching gold trim accents along the stem collars and base.
These exceptional stems originate from the historic glass-making regions of Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic) and are executed in the classic, opulent style popularized by luxury makers like Moser and Egermann. The heavy encrusted gilding and raised botanical enameling speaks to the historic "Moser-style" luxury ware designed for aristocratic estates. Historically used as "hock" glasses to serve fine white Rhine or Mosel wines, the color of the bowl was designed to beautifully filter light and enhance the presentation of the wine during formal multi-course dinners.
This pair survives in excellent antique condition with remarkable preservation of its delicate details. The heavy 24k gold leaf bands around the rims, stems, and bases remain exceptionally thick, bright, and intact, showing virtually none of the typical friction wear or fading from handling over the generations. The hand-painted enamel leaves are perfectly crisp with no chipping or color loss. The structural glass is pristine, completely free of chips, cracks, flea bites, or repairs, and the complex twisted ribbon stems are flawless.
Please note that there is a small amount of old adhesive residue still attached to the surface of the bowl. To protect the delicate 24k gold leaf and raised enamel detailing, this residue should not be scraped or treated with harsh chemical solvents; it simply needs to be soaked safely in warm, mild soapy water to naturally soften for gentle removal.
