Antique Blue Painted Woven Splint Basket with Removable Metal Liner – Primitive Folk Art
Wonderful old hand-woven wooden splint basket with an unusual form, beautiful aged blue painted surface, heavy braided/wrapped rim and braided carrying handles/straps.
The basket retains its removable cylindrical sheet-metal liner, which fits down inside the woven basket. The combination of the woven outer basket and removable metal insert makes this a particularly interesting primitive utility piece.
Measures approximately 13” tall and 11–12” across at the widest point, with an approximately 7” opening. Please refer to the measurement photos for additional dimensions.
The blue painted surface has extensive natural-looking age and wear, with areas of reddish-brown/darker coloration showing through. Great primitive appearance and patina.
Condition: One of the braided carrying handles/straps is broken/detached at the lower end, with a loose projecting strand, as clearly shown in the photos. There is additional age-related wear including paint loss, surface wear, some loose/broken splints, and oxidation and wear to the removable metal liner. No repairs have been attempted. The basket remains very attractive and displays extremely well.
Maker, exact age and original intended use are unknown. No attribution is being made to a particular region, maker or cultural group.
