Exceptional antique Austrian silver cigarette case featuring a finely detailed hand-painted enamel equestrian scene depicting a mounted woman and a gentleman holding the horse\'s reins in a wooded landscape.
The case is constructed from substantial .800 fine silver and weighs an impressive 212.50 grams. The interior retains its original gold wash/vermeil finish, which remains clearly visible with expected areas of wear from age and use.
The interior is hallmarked on both halves with an “FL” maker\'s mark, an Austrian Diana head silver hallmark with “3” and “A,” and the additional number “184.” The FL maker has not been conclusively identified and is left for further research.
The enamel work is remarkably detailed, particularly in the figures, horse, clothing, landscape and facial features. There is one localized area of enamel loss/chipping at the lower corner, shown clearly in the photographs. The primary figures and overwhelming majority of the painted scene remain intact and display beautifully.
The case opens and closes properly, and the original push-button latch functions as intended. The interior retaining bands are no longer present. The silver exterior shows natural tarnish, patina, surface wear and scratches consistent with an antique piece. It has been left unpolished to preserve its existing surface and patina.
