Wonderful small antique Spanish oak burl bowl, probably dating to the 19th century.
The bowl is hand-worked with a wonderfully irregular organic form and exceptionally attractive burl figuring, including numerous swirling "eyes" and areas of tightly figured grain. It has a deep interior, substantial rounded rim and broad base.
The interior has developed a very dark surface from age and use. Natural fissures, checks, inclusions and small voids are present throughout the burl, along with scratches and other expected evidence of considerable age.
Measurements: approximately 5 inches diameter × 3¼ inches maximum height.
Weight: 228 grams / 8 oz.
This bowl was examined photographically by noted burl-treen specialist and author Steven S. Powers, who identified it as Spanish oak burl and probably 19th century. He further noted that substantial numbers of these Spanish bowls were imported into the United States during the 1970s and were sometimes incorrectly represented in the antiques trade as American or Native American.
This example is therefore being accurately offered as Spanish antique burl treen and is not represented as Native American or American-made.
The surface has intentionally been left untouched. It has not been cleaned, polished, oiled, waxed, sanded or refinished.
