Beautiful antique Persian lacquered papier-mache qalamdan, or pen case, dating to the 19th century Qajar period. AI suggests through research this dates back to 1860-1875. The justification is in the decorative figures painted. In these years it was favored to use a mix of portrait ovals against a black background along with various birds and smaller figures. After 1880 they show a more densely naturalistic floral treatment. This piece is unsigned but the work is beautiful.
This traditional writing case features finely painted figural portrait scenes, birds, floral decoration and gilt detailing over a dark lacquer ground. The central panel depicts an elegantly dressed woman holding a flower, surrounded by additional portrait medallions and bird motifs. The underside is decorated with intricate gilt floral scrollwork.
The case consists of a decorated outer shell with a fitted sliding inner tray, originally intended to hold reed pens and other writing implements.
Condition is consistent with age and use. There is visible wear and small losses at the edge that pulls out. The interior shows age-related wear.
