Antique 19th C. French-Style Gilt Metal & Alabaster Porte-Montre Pocket Watch St.
An unusually ornate antique Continental, probably French,pocket-watch stand (porte-montre), dating to the later 19th century. Theapproximately 5-inch-high stand is constructed from exceptionally thin giltembossed/repoussé sheet metal with elaborate Rococo Revival scrollwork,delicate applied shell/mother-of-pearl floral decoration, green accents andfour small blue cabochon/paste-like ornaments. Mounted on a pale stone basebelieved to be alabaster, with an old iron rear support. Total weight approximately5.8 oz. The upper center shows evidence of a missing small fitting, possiblythe original watch-suspension hook.
