Beautiful early 20th-century Turkish cicim kilim, measuring approximately 51 inches wide by 58 inches long, excluding the fringe.
I purchased this textile approximately 40 years ago and was told at that time that it was already an antique. Its exact date and regional attribution are undocumented, but its construction, design and history suggest an estimated date of approximately the 1920s–1930s. The age has not been professionally authenticated, and buyers should form their own conclusions from the detailed photographs.
This is a handwoven flatweave textile with extensive raised cicim—or jijim—embroidery. It features an intricate patchwork-like arrangement of traditional Anatolian geometric motifs against a deep burgundy ground, accented with cream, black, blue, green, orange and gold. It retains its original hand-tied fringe.
The rug has been carefully stored away from sunlight during the entire 40 years it has been in my possession. Its colors remain remarkably deep, vibrant and well defined, with no apparent fading or color bleeding. The woven body is clean and structurally sound, and the fringe remains intact. Minor irregularities, occasional loose fibers and unevenness are characteristic of an old, handmade tribal textile.
An unusually well-preserved and visually impressive example suitable for display as a wall tapestry, decorative rug, furniture or bed covering, or addition to a collection of Turkish and Anatolian textiles.
