Antique Scarey Ann mechanical wooden hair-raising doll, from early Poppy Doll Company production in Atascadero, California, circa 1920s.
The mechanical hair-raising feature is WORKING. Operating the original metal lever causes the hair to rise from and retract into the top of the wooden head.
Doll retains substantial original painted finish and original-style bristle hair. Wonderful primitive folk-art appearance with hand-painted facial features and remnants of the painted decoration on the yellow body.
Condition is consistent with considerable age and use. There is paint loss, surface wear, scratches/scuffs, finish crazing, worn decoration and wear/chipping around the feet and other edges. Hair shows age and wear. Please examine all photographs closely as they are an important part of the condition description.
No restoration, repainting or repairs have been performed by me. The doll has intentionally been left in the condition in which it was found.
Mechanical hair-raising action was tested and is functioning at the time of listing.
