Very Good overall. A substantial full-leather volume, sound and square, with a firm binding. The dark leather covers feature decorative blind-stamped borders and gilt spine lettering. General rubbing and scuffing to the leather, with more pronounced wear along the spine ends and extremities. There is a section of leather loss at the rear hinge, exposing the underlying material, as shown in the photographs. All edges gilt, with some rubbing and surface wear. Previous ownership inscription to the front pastedown and handwritten entries in the family record pages. Otherwise unmarked, with clean, well-preserved text pages showing light age toning and occasional minor spotting. No dust jacket.
A large-format family Bible measuring approximately 10 × 7.5 × 3 inches. Contains both the Old and New Testaments in the English Revised Version, a nineteenth-century revision of the Authorized King James Version. The Old Testament preface discusses the principles of revision and the Hebrew and ancient textual sources consulted by the revisers. The New Testament includes its own preface, describing the history of English Bible translation from William Tyndale through the Authorized Version and the subsequent revision. The volume also includes printed family record pages for documenting births, marriages, and deaths, several of which contain handwritten entries spanning multiple generations.
The English Revised Version was a major undertaking in nineteenth-century biblical scholarship, with its New Testament first published in 1881 and its Old Testament in 1885. This copy has an additional personal history preserved in its family records, including names and dates extending into the twentieth century. A photograph of a gravestone associated with the family has been included at the end of the listing images as supplementary genealogical context.
