Beautiful late-19th-century decorative edition of The Poetical Works of Owen Meredith (Robert, Lord Lytton), published in New York by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co.
Owen Meredith was the pen name of Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton (1831–1891), British poet, diplomat and 1st Earl of Lytton. This substantial collection includes his famous verse novel Lucile along with numerous other poems and works.
The book features a burgundy cloth binding with elaborate gold gilt floral decoration and lyre motif on the front cover, additional gilt floral decoration and lettering on the spine, a portrait frontispiece of Lord Lytton, decorative title page and double-column text.
This copy is undated. Bibliographic records document a Thomas Y. Crowell edition of The Poetical Works of Owen Meredith published in 1884, while other surviving undated Crowell copies have ownership inscriptions dating to 1883. Accordingly, this copy is conservatively described as circa 1880s rather than assigned an exact publication year.
An attractive Victorian-era poetry volume with particularly nice shelf/display appeal for collectors of antique books, Victorian literature and decorative bindings.
