A Fête Galante by the Fountain
Antique French fête galante, a couple in 18th century dress by a park fountain, oil on canvas in the manner of Watteau, signed indistinctly and dated 1872 lower right, in a wide black frame with a gilt slip.
A lady in a long rose-red gown walks arm in arm with her companion across the grass, while their friends sit in a little group under the trees to the right. On the left a stone fountain spills water from a rocky basin, crowned with a carved figure. Tall trees close the park all around, and a pale light opens between them at the back. The costumes belong to the age of Watteau, a century earlier. By 1872 Paris had fallen in love with his world again, and painters were bringing its silk gowns and garden parties back to life, exactly as here.
