Please note: This Chambers edition of Kitto\'s Pictorial Bible was originally published in four volumes. This set includes Volumes I–III, covering the complete Old Testament (Genesis through Malachi). Volume IV (the New Testament, Matthew–Revelation) is not included.
What sets this set apart is its documented provenance. Bound into Volume I is a beautifully gilt-tooled leather presentation plaque reading:
\"Presented to Mr. Thomas Hope (along with other vols.) by the Committee & Friends of the Total Abstinence Society on the occasion of his leaving town for Boness. Falkirk, 27th April 1869.\"
This is matched by a handwritten inscription in period ink on the facing flyleaf confirming the gift. A formal, dated presentation binding tied to a specific named 19th-century temperance society is genuinely uncommon — a tangible piece of Scottish social history, not just an old family Bible.
CONDITION: Spines show attractive gilt tooling and raised bands; marbled edges and endpapers are bright and well-preserved across all three volumes. One volume has a spine joint separation at the head/tail (see photos) — the text block itself is sound and complete, but this volume should be handled gently, and a buyer interested in conservation/rebacking should budget for it. Covers show honest wear consistent with age (surface scuffing, some fading) but no active damage beyond the noted spine. Text and illustrations throughout are clean and legible.
INCLUDED: A vintage 1907 postcard was found tucked inside one volume and will ship along with the set as a small piece of found ephemera.
