She has dressed for the evening. Her black velvet dress leaves the shoulders bare, edged with a thin line of lace, and a gold necklace set with green stones lies at her throat. Her dark hair falls long over one shoulder, with a single red flower pinned above the ear. A cream silk shawl slips down her arm, and in her hand, at the very bottom of the canvas, she holds a closed fan. She does not look at us. Her eyes are turned a little to the side, calm, against a plain dark red ground.
