This listing is for an exquisite, genuine 19th-century (circa 1865-1885) antiquarian volume: "Die Dame von Monsoreau" (Volume 1 / Erster Band) by the legendary master of historical romance, Alexander Dumas. This highly collectible edition was published in Stuttgart, Germany by the renowned Franckh’sche Verlagshandlung and masterfully produced by the historical print shop of E. Greiner’schen Buchdruckerei. Set during the tumultuous French Wars of Religion, this gripping sequel to "Chicot the Jester" / "Queen Margot" is presented in an incredibly rare, classic German translation printed in traditional period Fraktur script.
This book doubles as a lovely design statement piece. It features a striking, vibrant crimson cloth hardcover binding framed with a sharp black stamped border layout. The centerpiece of the volume is a highly detailed, well preserved blue-and-gold stamped French coat of arms displaying the royal Fleur-de-lis emblem. The spine features brilliant gold-gilt accent rules that catch the light beautifully on a library shelf. It is an ideal piece for serious Dumas completionists, collectors of European fine bindings, or high-end interior shelf staging.
This book is in Good to Very Good Antique Condition. The spine exterior binding is unglued a bit from the top and the front cover hinge is loose and there is a bit of separation at the top of the front end papers, but overall the decorative cloth binding is sound. The exterior shows expected late-Victorian shelf wear, including minor softening to the spine tips and light rubbing at the corner points. The gold gilt and colored stamping on the front board remain bright and unchipped.
Inside, the text block is secure aside from a minor page separation and the period paper shows natural, uniform golden age-toning appropriate for a book of this era, but is otherwise remarkably clean and generally free from the heavy, dark foxing or fingerprint smudging typical of well-read 1800s volumes. No modern ink markings or major tearing present.
