Warhol's work became a permanent part of the development of American Pop Art, a movement opposed to the aesthetics of assemblage. The closest to them was the form of "images," devoid of specific histories and individualization, challenging viewers to questions about the boundaries between reality and artifice, high art and mass culture, abstraction and figuration, and the interdependence of hand-made and mechanical work.
