Carlu, Jean. Entre le Marteau...et l’Enclume!, 1944, uses bold wartime graphic design to present Nazi Germany as trapped between Allied force and French resistance. Printed in Philadelphia for the French Commissariat à l’Information, the poster belongs to the visual culture of Free French propaganda before the liberation of Paris in August 1944. Its crossed-out swastika, hammer, anvil, and Allied flags turn a familiar French expression into a direct political image of Nazi defeat.
