A Alfred Hutty LITHOGRAPH. In thesummer of 1927, Hutty - already the most celebrated etcher in Charleston - wentnorth to Woodstock to study lithography under the legendary master printerBolton Brown. He drew roughly a dozen subjects on stone that summer, and thennever touched the medium again. This is one of them: a Charleston garden gateon Legare Street, the street whose gates he made famous in his etchings,pencil-titled 'A Gate on Legare, Charleston,' numbered 16, signed in pencil andcarrying his A.H. monogram in the stone.
Alfred Hutty (1877-1954) is thedefining printmaker of the Charleston Renaissance - 'Come quickly, have foundheaven,' he wired his wife on first seeing Charleston in 1919 - and his printsare held by the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian, and the Gibbes. HisCharleston subjects bring $800-2,600 at sale and $2,500-8,000 at Charlestongalleries; his lithographs almost never appear at all.
