Lieven Willemsz van Coppenol, the writing master: the larger plate, copy after Rembrandt van Rijn by Pierre-Francois Basan; artist; 18th century; FranceRembrandt\'s popularity as a printmaker led to him being extensively copied during his lifetime and beyond. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the workshop of Pierre-Francois Basan, in Paris, owned and handled many of his original copper plates, producing final or penultimate editions of them. Basan also published copies of Rembrandt prints, including this one, etched by Basan in the years 1789 – 1797.The image measure 13 x 11 1/16 inches, sheet size 14 x 12 inches. There is a flattened horizontal crease across the center, it has begun to tear on the right side and has been stabilized with Lineco archival mending tissue in a couple of places. The antique laid paper has overall even toning.The Metropolitan Museum of Art also has this Basan Coppenol in their permanent collection (see last image in gallery)
