Lorenzo P. Latimer Painting Description and Item Information
Up for sale is this antique watercolor painting by L. P. Latimer. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This serene painting on thick paper depicts a California landscape scene of trees near a rocky stream. The painting is matted, but not framed; the painting is affixed/hinged to the mat via tape, as shown in Photo 6. The sight area within the mat measures approximately 5 1/2 inches by 3 5/16 inches. The paper is a bit larger (with slightly irregular edges), at about 5 3/4 inches by 3 5/8 inches. The exterior mat measurements (also with somewhat irregular edges) are approximately 9 3/4 inches by 7 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 1.1 ounces. This would make a nice addition to a collection of early California fine art, or it would complement an arts and crafts bungalow decor. Identification
There are notations to the lower left, lower right, and back side, as shown. I can read the artist\'s name on the front right (Photo 4), but I can not make out the writing on the left front (see Photo 5). Verso, there is handwriting which says, \"Trosper House July 7, 1910.\" The pencil notations on the back may be related to former framing.Lorenzo Palmer Latimer (1857-1941) is a well-known artist, with a listing on askART. Per askART, Latimer was born in Gold Hill (Placer County), California to pioneer parents. His father was a gold miner and lawyer, and his mother died when he was a young child. Latimer\'s father remarried, and the family moved to Sonoma County, California, and later to San Francisco. He attended McClure\'s Military Academy in Oakland, and the School of Design in San Francisco, where he was a student of Virgil Williams. After graduation in 1882, Latimer opened a studio in San Francisco. By 1883, he was teaching outdoor classes in picturesque California locations, mostly to women artists. After a brief rest period in Sonoma County, he returned to San Francisco where he taught at the Mark Hopkins Institute (later the California School of Design). Latimer exhibited with the San Francisco Art Association and at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He was a member of the Bohemian Club and of the Guild of Arts and Crafts. After losing much of his early work during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, he relocated to Berkeley. Latimer continued to teach, and he led painting trips to Sierra Nevada locations such as Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. In 1916, he began teaching classes in Reno, Nevada, where students later organized the Latimer Art Club; members founded the Nevada Art Gallery, which was succeeded by the Nevada Museum of Art. He passed away in Berkeley in 1941. Works by Latimer are in the collections of the Bohemian Club, the Sierra Nevada Museum in Reno, and at the de Young Museum.The Trosper House was a resort located in Cazadero, in Sonoma County, California. It was built by Francis Drake Trosper. Notable guests to the resort, besides Lorenzo Latimer, included Jack London, Luther Burbank, Herbert Waite Slayer, and Peter B. Kyne. This historic resort burned down in 1937. The stream depicted is Austin Creek. Condition
This piece looks good overall, as shown. There is yellowing to the watercolor paper; beneath the mat, there is darkened discoloration at the edges. The mat partially covers the writing on the lower front. The mat and the back side are as shown.
