ANTIQUE FRENCH MINIATURE GENTLEMAN PORTRAIT C.1820
Dear collectors,Noblesse-Collectionis pleased to propose you thisFine antique portraitminiature depicting an elegant gentleman, painted circa 1818–1825, at the transition betweenthe late Napoleonic Empire and the Bourbon Restoration.
The sitter wears a dark coat with broad lapels and a remarkably high, structured white cravatrising along the sides of the face. This type of increasingly elaborate and stiffened neckwearbecame particularly fashionable around 1818 and developed further during the early 1820s.
His relatively short hair and pronounced sideburns are equally characteristic of fashionablemale appearance during the early Restoration period. Together, these details provide particularlyuseful evidence for dating the portrait to around 1820.
The face is sensitively modelled, with finely rendered eyes, complexion and sideburns.Signed in red “E.M.” at the lower right. The artist has not been identified.
