Finely bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine richly gilt in compartments with floral and scroll motifs, red morocco title label lettered in gilt, marbled edges and matching endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Alfred Smith of White House, Lutterworth, to front pastedown.
A later edition of Smedley’s popular Victorian novel, originally issued in 1855, retaining the celebrated illustrations by “Phiz,” best known for his collaborations with Charles Dickens. This edition was printed from the original plates and published under the later Virtue Brothers & Co. imprint.
Condition: Some rubbing and wear to extremities, light scuffing and edge wear to boards, spine a bit sunned; scattered foxing to preliminaries and plates, text clean and crisp throughout. A sound and attractive copy in a handsome mid-Victorian binding.
