First edition of one of the classic firsthand narratives of the Civil War, Lieutenant William Pittenger’s dramatic account of the Andrews Raid—better known as the “Great Locomotive Chase.” Pittenger, one of the surviving participants in the daring Union mission to penetrate Confederate territory and destroy the Western & Atlantic Railroad, recounts the famous raid, pursuit, capture, imprisonment, and eventual escape with vivid immediacy. The work became one of the foundational published accounts of the episode and remains highly sought after by Civil War and railroadiana collectors alike.
Octavo. Original dark blue pebbled cloth, covers ruled in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Pittenger engraved by Samuel Sartain, additional illustrated plates and in-text wood engravings throughout, including scenes of the locomotive chase, imprisonment, and Medal of Honor illustration. 356 pp.
A solid copy. Binding sound and clean with minor rubbing and shelf wear; corners bumped; gilt on spine still clear. Interior complete with plates present. With the attractive engraved armorial-style bookplate of Henry B. Humphreys bearing the motto Inter Folia Fructus on the inside front cover. Minor foxing and scattered moisture staining throughout, heavier on some illustrated leaves. An attractive and honest example of a notoriously difficult Civil War title, retaining strong shelf presence in the original cloth.
