Circa 1875–1885, this Preferred Eight Per Cent Stock Certificate (#81) was ready for issue during Alabama’s Reconstruction‑era effort to rebuild and stabilize its rail network. The Western Rail Road Company of Alabama served as a key link between Montgomery, Selma, and connecting Southern lines, relying on state‑supported financing and preferred stock to attract new capital after repeated reorganizations. Lithographed in vivid red ink by Henry Seibert & Bros. of New York, the certificate features classic agricultural and locomotive vignettes symbolizing prosperity and industrial recovery. Most Western Rail Road certificates were redeemed, cancelled, or destroyed as the company later merged into successor systems, leaving relatively few surviving examples—especially preferred issues. Strong color, ornate borders, and its Reconstruction‑era financial context make this a scarce and visually compelling piece of Southern railroad history.
