A Treasury of American Poetry Mandelbaum Richardson Gramercy 733pg HC Jacket: $16.99
A Treasury of American Poetry - edited by Allen Mandelbaum and Robert D. Richardson Jr. (Gramercy Books, 2003) Seven hundred and thirty-three pages, roughly eight hundred poems, and about a hundred and fifty American poets from the colonial period through the early twentieth century - this is the big one-volume American anthology, the kind of book that answers most of the questions a reading list can throw at it. Dickinson, Whitman, Frost, Eliot, Poe, Longfellow and Millay are all here, and so are the voices that get left out of thinner collections: Native American songs, African American spirituals, hymns, ballads and carols, and immigrant poets writing their way into the language. Allen Mandelbaum was one of the great American translators - his versions of Dante, Homer and Virgil are standards - and Robert D. Richardson Jr. wrote the definitive biographies of Emerson and Thoreau, so the editorial hand behind the selection is a serious one. It is indexed by poet and by first line, which is what makes it genuinely usable: you can find the poem you half-remember. This volume was previously published as Three Centuries of American Poetry. ๐ Book Details - ๐ข Publisher: Gramercy Books, New York - an imprint of Random House Value Publishing, by arrangement with Bantam Books
