For sale is a rare collector's medal made of solid 999 fine silver to commemorate Alan Shepard's first manned space flight in the USA on January 5th. May 1961:
Topic: US space travel / NASA Mercury program (mission MR-3)
Material: Fine silver (.999 Ag)
Edge hallmark: Originally embossed on the edge with “999 Fine Silver”
Weight: 17.13 grams (weighed on precision scales)
Condition: Very nice collector's coinage with a grown, dark original patina. The medal has deliberately not been cleaned, dipped or polished in order to fully preserve its authentic vintage condition.
Motives:
Front: Freedom 7 space capsule on its flight path over the curvature of the Earth with the inscription “MERCURY SHEPARD FREEDOM 7”.
Reverse: The distinctive symbol of the Mercury program (number 7 merged with the astronomical symbol of Mercury).
