Nice original group of six vintage Lionel Corporation SP Smoke Pellets bottles for heater-type smoke-equipped locomotives.
The lot includes four bottles with the blue-face Lionel Smoke Pellets label and two with the orange-face label. The blue-face version is recognized as a somewhat scarcer label variation. Lionel produced several different SP bottle and label variations during the postwar period.
All six bottles still contain pellets, although the amount and condition vary. Some retain a substantial number of intact pellets, while others contain a mixture of pellets, fragments and powder. The two center bottles shown in the photographs have the most deterioration/powder, particularly one bottle where much of the contents has broken down.
The labels vary in condition with age-related wear, fading, staining, edge loss and missing paper. One bottle has considerably more label loss than the others. Please use the detailed photographs as the primary description of condition.
I gently turned each cap only enough to determine whether it was stuck. All six caps turn. I did not remove the caps, empty the bottles, count the pellets or otherwise inspect the contents.
These came from a large estate train collection that is being listed over time. I am not a train expert and have made no attempt to clean, restore or alter them.
