Healthy bare root strawberry runner plants. Hardy to northern winters. Berries can reach upward to 2.5 inches. Can grow a second crop later in the season, but the heaviest crop is in June. Extremely sweet and juicy. Can be frozen or canned for storage.
California Giants are hard to come by. They are a commercial variety that is often kept from the public. So supplies are limited. These are often the giant strawberries you see in stores shipped from California.
The runners produced by the California Giants are rather small, especially when compared to the rather large mother plant. Once these runners begin to root, we clip them and sell them. Don't let the small runner plant fool you. They grow fast into large, prolific plants.
We only sell the very healthiest runner plants. They are grown organically and with a steady dose of natural sulfur to keep them disease free.
Very easy to grow. Needs moderate to bright sunlight, medium amounts of water and fertilizer. We use organic soybean meal with a bit of lime and sulfur. A boost of phosphorous will promote flowering. Can be grown in pots, but better in larger sizes, or garden rows due to the plant and berry size.
These plants are rooted runners from the mother plant, so it is guaranteed what you will have. The root structures will vary from just starting to fully developed. Please see the picture above for an accurate sample of what your plants will look like. Once your plants begin to grow, cut the runners for increased berry production, or let the runners grow for propagation.
These plants are picked on the day they are shipped. They are healthy and vibrant. If you have any difficulties at all, just send us a kind note and we will fix any issue. WateringWater strawberry plants frequently, especially after transplanting. Water deeply and thoroughly, wetting the soil to a depth of 0.5 to 1 foot. Water more often in sandy soils, and avoid letting the soil dry out completely between waterings. Drip irrigation or a soaker hose can help reduce disease and weed problems.
FertilizingFertilize strawberry plants in early spring with an all-purpose fertilizer, and again when flowers appear with a high-potassium tomato fertilizer. Strawberries need a fertilizer with little to no nitrogen, as too much nitrogen can lead to heavy leaf growth and little fruit.
WeedingWeed strawberry plants regularly, especially when they are young. Cultivation can also help keep runner plants within the row and help them root.
MulchingMulch in November when plants start to go dormant to help with fluctuating temperatures.
Removing runnersFor the first two years, remove runners so the plant can focus on growing roots and production. After that, you can let runners propagate future plants.
ReplantingReplant strawberry plants every 4–5 years, as yields will likely diminish after that. When replanting, use new soil in a clean container to avoid pests and diseases.
ThinningThin strawberry plants to about five to six plants per square foot of row.
Pinching flowersPinch off flower buds for the first few weeks after planting so the plant can focus on producing leaves and roots
