We did pop in a battery and tested every one, each came on backlight worked, vibrate worked, beep worked, display self test "------------" worked, and pushing the grey button changed display to "0"

(NEGATIVE END AT BATTERY COVER)CAREFULLY ALIGN AND SLIDE COVER BACK IN PLACE, THEN SLIDE LOCK INTO LOCK POSITION.
- SLIDE POWER SWITCH ON SIDE TO SILENT/VIBRATE OR SOUND MODE.
