Up for sale we have a very nice example of a "dhal" shield, apparently originating in nineteenth-century India. Thick leather construction with a 16" diameter, this fabulous shield has painted hunting scenes and a central painting of leaders. We're unsure of exactly what type of leather this is, but it is in fair condition. One crack just over 1" as pictured, but still strong and intact. There is a painted border in gold on the reverse as well.
There is scattered flaking as shown, but still this remains a striking example with vivid imagery and excellent mustaches. Please excuse the glare when we were photographing this item both indoors and outside.There are two metal ornaments and holes for four more. The metal pieces appear to be hand-forged iron, and the handle is thinner leather.
When held up to light, this shield glows a warm red. Photos available upon request.
