19th Century 5 Gallon Salt & Slip Glazed Butter Churn w/Cobalt Pattern & Dasher:
$139.99

This 19th century 5-gallon salt and slip glazed butter churn with it two carrying handles on either side of it is a large kitchen display piece with a naive and primitive style. Made of pottery in the United States, this original piece features a cobalt blue pattern and comes with a oak wood dasher (churner) with a rawhide hanging loop on the end of it to hang it up on a wall when the churn is not in use. The unsigned churn reflects the craftsmanship of a bygone era, making it a valuable addition to any antique collection or primitive decor.
Salt glaze is the process of adding ordinary salt into a kiln when firing a piece of pottery at high temperatures to give it a grey exterior color and a glossy appearance to it like the butter churn in this listing. The floral pattern and curly cue "5" for five gallons on the front of the piece requires even higher kiln temperatures to fuse the cobalt metal oxides onto the churn for decoration and to alert the churner that this churn holds five gallons of butter when full. The interior of the churn shows a dark brown glossy color, and this is a process called slip glaze where the interior brown glossy glaze responds to boiling hot water to sterilize the churn before using to churn butter killing harmful bacteria from contaminating the butter produced from churning it in the churn.
During the 19th century churning butter was common as butter is necessary for cooking, frying, baking, and as a spread on cooked foods like bread. oftentimes dairy farmers churned larger quantities of butter to sell at the general store in rural America, and they oftentimes used a butter press with an impressed stamp to stamp their initials or a pattern into fresh butter so the general store keeper could tell the difference between whose butter belonged to who. Butter presses can also be found on and many people that own a churn like to have a press to complete their display.
A butter churn like the one in this listing would do well in a country farm kitchen, French country, urban farm kitchen, shabby-chic, traditional, and eclectic decorum's because of the churns primitive look to it. It would do well on the hearth near a fireplace, in a front entryway, or anywhere you would want an antique from a by gone day. And because this churn is over 100 years old it will only increase in value over time. There are a few minor flaws on this lovely piece found on the outside rim is a chip that at some point was repaired and there is a chigger bite near the rim and one underneath it too. Otherwise, this piece is like new.
The butter churn with the dasher upright measures 34" tall X 10" wide from handle-to-handle X 8 1/2" in diameter across the top X 10" in diameter across the bottom of it. I is unmarked and in very good condition despite a few flaws but after all it is well over 100 years old. *
