1997 Donruss Studio Ken Griffey Jr. #16 – Portrait Collection Blue Foil
Extremely scarce Ken Griffey Jr. variation from the unusual 1997 Donruss Studio Portrait Collection program.
This card features the distinctive blue foil “PORTRAIT COLLECTION” seal on the front and is unsigned and unnumbered.
The 1997 Studio Portrait Collection was a special-order Donruss program associated with premium framed Studio portrait presentations rather than a standard pack-issued parallel. Completed Portrait Collection examples are known with photographer signatures and serial numbering to 500.
This example is different: it carries the factory Portrait Collection foil treatment but does not have a photographer signature or serial number. Similar unsigned/unnumbered Portrait Collection cards have been described in the hobby as “proof” or “unreleased” examples, but I have not found documentation establishing those terms as official Donruss designations. The exact production quantity and distribution of these unsigned blue-foil cards are unknown.
An exceptionally difficult Griffey variation that rarely surfaces and is not well documented in standard checklists. A great card for an advanced Ken Griffey Jr. or 1990s insert/oddball collection.
