1965 US Mint Battelle Coinage Alloys Final Report Silver Clad Coins TreasuryScarce and historically important 1965 Final Report on A Study of Alloys Suitable for Use as United States Coinage, prepared by Battelle Memorial Institute for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Mint, dated February 12, 1965. Published during the pivotal period when the United States was confronting dwindling silver supplies and evaluating replacement materials for circulating coinage.
This technical report documents the extensive research undertaken by Battelle for the U.S. Mint into alternative coinage compositions, including silver-copper alloys, cupronickel, copper-nickel clad compositions, nickel alloys, stainless steel, zirconium, columbium and other prospective materials. Battelle\'s research ultimately played an important role in the historic transition of United States circulating coinage from traditional silver compositions to clad coinage. Battelle itself describes the research as having led to a fundamental change in U.S. Treasury coin production, while later congressional testimony characterized the report as instrumental in the development of the Coinage Act of 1965.
Of particular interest to numismatists is the report\'s documentation of experimental Mint testing. Battelle oversaw experimental dime-, quarter- and half-dollar-size pieces produced in numerous alternative metals, with special dies prepared by Mint designers and engravers to approximate the characteristics of circulating coins.
The volume includes extensive technical data concerning the availability and cost of silver and alternative metals, physical and mechanical properties, Mint manufacturing operations, counterfeiting and slugging considerations, economic consequences of changing coinage materials, and recommendations for future U.S. coin compositions. Multiple appendices examine metal supply and demand, silver availability, coin-operated devices and actual Mint operations.
Especially noteworthy is the Battelle transmittal letter to U.S. Mint Director Eva Adams, dated February 12, 1965, reproduced at the beginning of the report. The letter states that Battelle was submitting 200 copies of its Final Report to the Mint. This should not be interpreted as establishing a 200-copy total edition, as copies were subsequently offered through the U.S. Government Printing Office, but it provides remarkable documentary context for the report\'s original presentation to the Treasury Department. The same letter is preserved in the Newman Numismatic Portal\'s digitized example.
The report is further distinguished by its large folding statistical tables and charts, several of which present projections for American and worldwide silver production, consumption, monetary stocks and the effects of alternative silver contents in subsidiary U.S. coinage.
