Up for sale is a well-preserved copy of a softcover copy of the famous sermon The Greatest Thing in the World, by the Scottish evangelist, biologist, and writer Henry Drummond (1851-1897). The book\'s publisher is James Pott & Co. of New York, and the words \"Author\'s Edition\" appear on the cover at the left, with \"Copyrighted\" at the bottom right.
The 64-page publication, with an attractive dark green-inked decoration on the front cover, measures 5 inches wide by 7-1/4 inches high. The illustration shows a pot of ball-shaped blossoms growing out of a scroll-adorned lower area with the word \"LOVE\" at the bottom, and the words within the \"balls\" are \"GOOD TEMPER,\" \"KINDNESS, \"PATIENCE,\" \"UNSELFISHNESS,\" \"HUMILITY,\" \"GENEROSITY,\" \"COURTESY,\" \"GUILELESSNESS,\" and \"SINCERITY.\"
There\'s a decorative old bookseller\'s label affixed to the top right of the front pastedown, reading \"COBURN & STRAIT, / BOOKS & STATIONERY / WALL PAPER / 17 LAKE STREET / OWEGO, N. Henry Drummond FRSE FGS (17August 1851 – 11 March 1897) was aScottish evangelist, biologist, writer,and lecturer.

Many of his writings were tooadapted to the needs of his own day to justify the expectation that they wouldlong survive it.His sermon \"The Greatest Thing in the World\"remains popular in Christian circles.

Early Life. Drummondwas born at Park Place inStirling, his father Henry Drummond (1809-1888)and his mother, Jane Campbell Blackwood (d.1910) Henry being the grandson ofWilliam Drummond (d.1888) a seedsman and founder of Drummond Seeds. His earlyeducation was atStirling High School and Morrison’s Academy.

Drummond was educated atEdinburghUniversity, where he displayed a strong inclination for physical andmathematical science. The religious element was an even more powerful factor inhis nature, and he entered the Free Church of Scotland. While preparing for theministry, he became for a time deeply interested in the evangelizing missionofD. L. Moody and I. D. Sankey, where he was active for two years.Theologically,Drummond was significantly influenced by the Reveil movement in ReformedProtestantism.

Career. In1877 he was lecturer on natural science in theFree Church College onLynedoch Street inGlasgow, which enabled him to combine all the pursuitsfor which he felt a vocation.Drummond advocated fortheisticevolution.His studies resulted in his writing Natural Law in theSpiritual World, the argument being that the scientific principle ofcontinuity extends from the physical world to the spiritual. Before the bookwas published in 1883, an invitation from theAfrican Lakes CompanytookDrummond to Central Africa.

In 1880 he was elected aFellowof the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were SirArchibaldGeikie, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, John Gray McKendrick, and Sir RobertChristison.

On his return in the followingyear, he found himself famous. In 1884 he was a guest at Haddo Housefor adinner hosted byJohn Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Marquess of Aberdeen andTemair, in honor of William Ewart Gladstone on his tour of Scotland.Largebodies of serious readers, among the religious and the scientific classesalike, discovered inNatural Lawthe common ground theyneeded; and the universality of the demand proved, if nothing more, theseasonableness of its publication. Drummond continued to be actively interestedin missionary and other movements among the Free Church students.

In 1888 he publishedTropicalAfrica, a valuable digest of information.In 1890 he traveled inAustralia,and in 1893 he delivered the Lowell Lectures inBoston. He had meant tokeep them aside for mature revision, but an attempted piracy compelled him tohasten their publication, and they appeared in 1894 under the title ofTheAscent of Man. Their object was to ratifyaltruismor, thedisinterested care and compassion of animals for each other, important ineffecting thesurvival of the fittest, a thesis previously maintained byphilosopher professorJohn Fiske.

Personal Life. Drummondnever married and had no children. In the late stage of his life, he lived at 3Park Circus in Glasgow.

Death. Drummond\'shealth failed shortly afterThe Ascent of Man.He had sufferedfrombone cancerfor some years, and he died on 11 March 1897 whiletravelling inTunbridge Wells. His body was returned toHoly RudeCemeteryin Stirling for burial with his parents. The grave, marked by alarge distinctive red granite Celtic cross, stands just northeast of thechurch.

In 1905 a medallion plaque tohis memory was erected in the Free Church College in Edinburgh, sculptedbyJames Pittendrigh Macgillivray.

The overall condition of this antiquarian softcover title is good, considering its great age. The binding is holding together well, with no loose pages or any danger of the book coming apart at the spine or elsewhere (though of course it must be handled carefully). There\'s some spotting, smudging, rubbing, edgewear, etc., on the wrapper. The off-white end pages at the rear are clean and unmarked, with an 1892 penciled inscription on the front free end page and an interesting old bookseller\'s label (from Coburn & Strait, Owego, NY) at the top right of the front pastedown. All the pages within seem to be age-toned / yellowed / darkened, with some spotting, smudging, etc., here and there. No human-made markings can be seen on the text pages within, so there are no annotations, marginalia, underlining, highlighting, etc., within, nor any major damage or flaws in the way of clipped or missing pages, tape repairs, water or other liquid damage, large tears, etc. All three page edges are smooth-cut, with the top edge gilded (though the gilding is barely visible) and the side and bottom edges uncolored / ungilt. The book has neither a musty nor smoky odor.
