Impressive large-format antique Family Holy Bible published by National Publishing Co., Philadelphia.
This is a substantial and beautifully decorated Victorian-era Bible featuring an ornate embossed binding with extensive gilt decoration, raised panels, illustrated biblical scenes, gilt page edges, and two large metal clasps. The spine is marked “Holy Bible – References,” “With the Old and New Versions of the New Testament,” and “2000 Illustrations.”
The title page describes the volume as containing the Old and New Testaments along with a complete concordance, Dr. William Smith’s Standard Bible Dictionary, history of religious denominations, descriptions of the Tabernacle and Temple, the Revised New Testament, and over 2,000 Scripture illustrations on steel, wood, and in colors.
The Bible contains numerous detailed engravings and full-page illustrations. Some full-page plates retain their original protective tissue guards. It also includes decorative Family Portraits pages.
Condition:
Considering its considerable age, the Bible remains in good antique condition. The book is still quite solid, substantial, and structurally sturdy.
The interior pages are generally well preserved for their age, with expected age toning and occasional age-related spotting or discoloration. The ornate exterior shows normal wear from age and handling, particularly along the edges, corners, and spine. The surface of the cover has some areas where the material is beginning to flake/peel slightly, as shown in the photographs.
Both large metal clasps are present and intact. The gilt page edges remain quite attractive.
There is only a minimal old-book/storage odor.
The Family Portrait section contains signs of previous family use, and historical papers/documents associated with the former owner were found stored inside the Bible. These are included with the book as part of its history.
Please carefully review all photographs for the exact condition, binding wear, pages, illustrations, clasps, and other details. Due to its age, normal antique imperfections should be expected.
