This large Victorian-era volume contains an eclectic collection covering history, science, inventions, literature, nature, animals, notable people, geography and civilization, accompanied by period illustrations and engravings.
The illustrated frontispiece, captioned “From the Lowest to the Highest Type of Animal Life,” is particularly striking. Other photographed content includes articles concerning Pompeii, Charles Sumner, patents and inventions, Colorado, natural products and other subjects.
Original dark cloth binding features an elaborate embossed and gilt pictorial design with “The Growing World” on the front cover and gilt title panel on the spine.
Covers show heavy rubbing, fading/discoloration, spotting/soiling, scratches and worn edges/corners. Decorative gilt remains visible and attractive in areas.
Binding is weakened. The front inner hinge is significantly split/separated with binding material exposed. Rear hinge also shows wear/separation. Spine ends and exterior edges have fraying and cloth loss.
Endpapers show staining, marks, scuffs and paper loss. Interior pages have expected age toning, scattered foxing/spotting, stains, edge wear and occasional small tears/creases. A photographed page has an old clear tape repair at the lower corner.
The text block remains together in the areas photographed, but due to the age and weakened binding, the book should be handled carefully.
Book has not been inspected page-by-page, so additional marks, tears, repairs, loose pages or other age-related flaws may be present.
