Description:Up for sale is a beautiful, genuine mid-Victorian antiquarian folio featuring the satirical social illustrations of renowned caricaturist John Leech. This volume contains hundreds of highly detailed humorous wood engravings depicting 19th-century British society, leisure, sports, and domestic life as originally featured in Punch magazine. This extraordinary volume is a composite binding that includes BOTH the First Series and the Second Series of \"Pictures of Life and Character,\" each complete with its own beautifully engraved title page.
Condition Notes:- Binding: Bound in a sturdy period half-leather spine and corners with textured dark boards. Shows typical shelf wear and rubbing along the edges and corners appropriate for a book over 160 years old.- Interior: Pages are securely bound. The paper shows consistent age-toning typical of Victorian-era paper stock, but the illustrations and text remain clear and legible throughout. The 1863 series includes the full printed Index pages which the Second Series dating 1862 lacks. Please note that a previous owner has made numerous small taped repairs over the years, mostly along the vulnerable bottom edges of the pages to reinforce tears from page-turning.
